Formstack has a new live form version!
There are some big new features out of the box to note:
- Updated WCAG and 508 Compliance
- New Progress Bar that shows page number
- Updated Date/Time fields
- A new Share page
- On-field error messages
- Default to blank instead of the first option for dropdown
To convert old forms to the new version, you can use the new migration tool. The migration tool is available for Forms Admins on their Home or Forms screen. It's important to note that we're calling this current version V4, while older versions would fall into V2 or V3 categories depending on how old the forms are.
Users should take caution before upgrading
-
Users with custom CSS in their Form
- The structure of the form is updated. This may cause visual changes if you are using custom CSS, please review and update CSS if needed (CSS theme overview)
-
Users with custom HTML or scripts in their Form
- If you use the Advanced HTML Header and Footer or the Embed Code field to add custom script to your form, when the form is updated the scripts may have to be updated as well.
-
Users with embedded forms
-
The embed code fields don’t have to be updated but as the structure has changed you may want to review your embedded forms to make sure that the form is updated.
- If you are using the HTML Embed option, your form is static so the form will not update where it is embedded. You will need to re-embed the form in this instance.

It's important to note that If you have V2 (a legacy version of the form) you are required to choose a theme as the V2 themes are not compatible with the new forms version.
- If you go to your theme settings and there isn’t a "Quick Styles" option, you have an old theme and you will need to update.

Frequently Asked Questions
Option 1: Update all
Update All is the option when clicking “Update All” on the Home page widget or “Begin Update” on the banner on the Forms tab. This will update all forms on your account that are not V4.
Option 2: Upgrade one at a time
Just like the upgrade all option, If the form is a V2 form, you are required to choose a theme as the V2 themes are not compatible with the new forms.
Option 3: Upgrade in batches
Just like the previous options, you will have the ability to choose a theme to add to the form, this will change the theme on all of the chosen forms. If the form is a V2 form, you are required to choose a theme as the V2 themes are not compatible with the new forms.
FAQ
Will this affect my submissions?
No, the transition for form version should not affect your submissions. The field settings are all the same between versions so data will be stored and displayed in the same way.
Is there a way to see what the form will look like?
Yes, you can preview what a form will look like in the new version by clicking the "Preview latest version" button next to the forms on the list. This list will show up under your migration tool widget on the home page and you'll see an option to preview the latest version when you hover over the name of the form you're interested in updating. Once you've clicked the preview latest version link, a new tab with a preview of your form will open up.
What if my form is embedded?
If you were using the javascript embed code, an iFrame or the Lightbox embed code the code structure is the same and when you convert a form the URL is the same so you don’t need to re-embed.
We do suggest you do view the form once it’s updated in the embed as the updates to the form may have caused visual changes on the form.
*If you are using the HTML Embed option, your form is static so the form will not update where it is embedded. You will need to re-embed the form in this instance.
What was included in the new WCAG compliance?
Compliance is for WCAG 2.1. The Formstack Light and Formstack Dark themes were tested for compatibility. The audit was completed on all form fields and settings. If you would like to view the full review and VPAT, you can find that on the Formstack Trust page.
